Reporting Absences:

Highland High School Absence Notification

Please do not call the school to report an absence. When a student returns to the school after an absence, he or she is required to bring a note from a parent/guardian stating the reason for the absence. The student must take this note to the Attendance Office and place it into the “Attendance Box.” The note must be turned-in within three (3) days of the absence. Information in the note must consist of the following: 

  • Student’s name 
  • Date of absence 
  • Grade level 
  • Reason 
  • Parent signature 
  • Phone number and e-mail address (if available) 

After 10 days of unexcused absences, the district will contact the parent/guardian by mail, followed by a phone call. 

Attendance / Tardy Policy

Absences may be excused for the following reasons: 

  • Appointments with verification 
  • Death in the family (obituary) 
  • Religious commitment 
  • Illness* (over 3 days students will need doctor’s note) 
  • Family emergency (note specifying reason for absence) 
  • School or college visit (note specifying college visited) 

Parents whose children have serious or chronic illness should work with the school to develop a health plan to ensure student success. 

Tardies

Late arrival to class is an issue of serious concern. When students are tardy both students and teachers are impacted. Teachers must stop instruction, repeat material or directions, and adjust attendance records while prompt students must wait while the distraction is addressed. Seven minutes are allotted in the school schedule for students to travel between classes. Teachers can assign tardy students to lunch detention. 

Students may make up written work when they have been tardy, but not all work impacting grades is written. Students who miss more than 50% of a class will be considered absent from that class.

APS Attendance Policy

Cell Phones / Personal Electronic Devices

Cell Phones, iPods, CD players, tape players, pagers, and radios are not allowed in class unless part of a teacher’s instructional plan. It is to the discretion of school personnel how it will be used within the instruction. It is the sole responsibility of students to secure their electronic devices. Lost or stolen items will not be replaced by the school.

Student Rights and Responsibilities

Dress Code

Student dress often reflects student behavior. Any outside affiliations, especially dress that suggests gang affiliation or illegal activity, should not be brought onto the school campus. Student dress may not present a health or safety hazard, violate municipal or state law, or present a potential for disruption to the instructional program. Attire or accessories, which advertise, display or promote any drug (including alcohol or tobacco), sexual activity, violence, disrespect and/or bigotry toward any group, are not acceptable. 

Staff and administration have the ultimate discretion to determine if a student’s dress is inappropriate or displays a potential to disrupt the educational environment.

Student Parking

Students park their vehicles at their own risk; the school is not responsible for any theft or vandalism inside the vehicle. Students should park in the student parking lots, which requires a parking permit of $30. To receive that parking permit students must show their proof of insurance, driver’s license and registration. Parents, please note that the parking lot is locked during school hours. Students often choose not to park in the parking lot during the school hours because they want to leave. Student with legitimate reasons are allowed to leave the student parking lot. Any student car parked in the Staff lot is subject to ticketing and/or towing.
